THE ART OF WOMEN

Women’s History at the National Gallery of Art

From paintings of women with names like Saint Helena the Empress of the Roman Empire to women who remain nameless to this day, artists offer windows into their societies and the roles played within them. This tour will take us through the National Gallery of Art’s collection to discuss women who existed in places of power and in situations without power both in front of artists and as the artists themselves. Women were subjects, patrons, muses, mythology, and artists but most clearly, they were there from the beginning until now. Join the discussion as we look beyond the superficial to see what we can learn from the past that only the artists dared to tell us.
